Warm lead
A prospect who has shown some awareness or interest in your product but hasn't yet asked for a sales conversation.
A warm lead sits between cold and hot. The person has done something that shows awareness or interest, such as engaging with your content, attending a webinar, or arriving through a customer referral, but they haven't asked to buy. A hot lead has raised their hand through a demo request or pricing inquiry, while a cold lead has no known relationship with you at all. The distinction drives treatment: hot leads go straight to a rep, and warm leads justify personal outreach or nurture toward a conversation. Warm lead describes the state of the prospect, which is worth separating from warm outbound, the motion of proactively contacting people in that state; a warm lead can just as easily convert inbound. The common mistake is treating every warm lead as sales-ready. Many are curious rather than buying, so fit checks and qualification still apply before a rep invests real time.
Examples
- Someone likes three of your company's LinkedIn posts over two weeks and follows the page, a warm lead worth enriching and checking against the ICP before outreach.
- A webinar attendee who asked a question during the Q&A is warm; the same person requesting a demo afterward would be hot and routed to a rep immediately.
- A customer introduces you to a peer at another company. The referral makes the lead warm even though the person has never touched your website.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a warm lead and warm outbound?
A warm lead is a state: a person who has shown some interest signal. Warm outbound is a motion: proactively contacting people in that state. A warm lead can also convert inbound with no outreach at all, and warm outbound is one way to act on warm leads before they come to you.
Is a warm lead the same as an MQL?
They overlap but differ in formality. Warm lead is a loose label for anyone showing interest. An MQL is a defined stage where a lead crosses a specific scoring threshold and gets handed to sales. Many warm leads never meet the MQL bar, and some MQL definitions include leads a rep would still call lukewarm.
