Lead enrichment
The process of adding missing or updated information to a lead record so it can be qualified and acted on.
Lead enrichment is the practice of filling in the gaps on a contact or company record. A raw lead often arrives with very little, maybe just a name and a LinkedIn URL, or an email and nothing else. Enrichment attaches the fields a sales or marketing team actually needs to act: job title, seniority, company name, employee count, industry, location, work email, and sometimes phone or social profiles. The goal is to take a thin record and make it complete enough to route, score, and contact. Enrichment matters for two reasons. First, it saves reps from manual research, which is slow and inconsistent. Second, it makes qualification possible. You cannot match a lead against your ICP or score it if you do not know the company size or the person's role. Enrichment runs at different moments. Some teams enrich on capture, the instant a form is submitted, so the lead is routed correctly within seconds. Others enrich in batches, cleaning and updating an existing database on a schedule because data decays. People change jobs and companies grow, so a record that was accurate a year ago may now be wrong. Good enrichment also verifies, not just appends, since adding a stale or incorrect field is worse than leaving it blank.
Examples
- A form captures only an email address, and an enrichment step appends the person's title, company, headcount, and industry before routing them to a rep.
- A team exports a list of people who engaged with a LinkedIn post and enriches each profile into a full lead record with work email and firmographics.
- A CRM runs monthly enrichment to catch contacts who changed jobs, updating their company and title so outreach does not bounce.
Frequently asked questions
What data does lead enrichment usually add?
Common fields include job title, seniority, company name, headcount, industry, location, work email, phone, and social profiles. The exact set depends on what your qualification and routing rules need.
How is enrichment different from list buying?
List buying gives you brand-new contacts you did not have. Enrichment takes leads you already captured and completes or refreshes their records. Many teams do both, but they solve different problems.
